Internet Gateway/Software:
With an internet merchant account, merchants will process their customer cards through their website. These sales are typically received through a secured gateway on the internet. By offering your customers the ease of processing their cards on your website you will, in a sense, be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Not only can you process cards over the internet, you can also use the PC Charge Software or the Authorize.Net gateway to accept cards in your retail storefront.
"How it Works" Diagram

Following the steps 1 thru 9, this illustrates how the online process works. Starting from the merchant's business, all the way down to the credit card issuer, back to the business. The Credit Card Interchange passes the appropriate funds for the transaction to the Merchant's Bank, which then deposits funds into the merchant's bank account. The funds are typically deposited into your primary bank account within two to four business days.
